THREE BEARS
The name of the youth hostel means “three bears” and indeed bears roam the woods of Älvdalen county. However, you have to be very lucky to get a glimpse of a bear. Bears are cautious animals that try to keep out of sight. Your best chance of seeing one is to find a lofty spot in the countryside from which you can look over a very vast area. This is best done during the hours of dusk and dawn. At that time, moose also roam the area, searching for herbs and twigs. We arrange special tours, or, for those who want to explore on their own, we are happy to give advice.

THE ÄLVDALEN AREA

Of course there is much more to experience in the Älvdalen area. There are sights here that go as far back as the Stone Age. Our speciality is archaeology and history. We offer guided tours or, if you want to explore the area by yourself, we are happy to give advice.

During the 19th century, the porphyry industry was very important to Älvdalen. King Carl XIV Johan owned a factory here and many items of polished porphyry were spread throughout Europe as gifts to the royal courts of the time. You can learn more about this at the museum in the village. Älvdalen was also known for its accordions and a fine collection is on display at the museum.

FLY FISHING
Salmon and grayling can be caught in the streams of Österälvdalen and Rotälven rivers in the summer. We offer special weekend packages with courses in fly fishing. A special guide will help you train your skills and afterwards we will make a meal from your catch. You can also hire a canoe or a bicycle if you want to take a trip of your own.

CELEBRATE MIDSUMMER ON HORSEPULLED WAGONS!
Our offer is a tour on open wagons pulled by carthorses. The strong horses pull the wagons and passengers high up in the woods, there people live in the summer and have their cattle grazing in the pastures around their loghouses. In clear weather we can view snowy mountains at the horizon. On our way home we watch raising the midsummerpole at the local museum. In the evening we eat a buffé with among others elk, salmon and strawberries at Tre Björnar.

Day 1. Arrival Thursday at 17.00-19.00. Info and a drink at 20.00
Day 2. Midsummer. Breakfast at 9.00 and after eating we go by car to a chalet called Stop. There the horses and wagons are waiting. Then we are pulled upwards to the summerpasture and the chalet of Brindberg. We are served an homemade oldfashioned luncheon made of local products. Perhaps we may hear some stories from the woodland too! On the way home we pass the homestead museum to see the midsummerpole raising and about 17.00 we are back at the Youth Hostel. After resting for a couple of a hours we eat dinner buffé in the diningroom at Tre Björnar. Day 3.Brunch 10.00-12.00 then time to leave or stay longer if you wish so. Very welcome!
